[birdky] RPT: Weekend odds and ends

I birded for awhile with Jane Bell, Pat Bell, and Judith McCandless (with Carol
and Anne also along) on their Birdathon on Sunday. On the family farm we got
nice looks at a singing Sedge Wren and fleeting looks at a streaking Merlin
(probably a male based on size); warblers were relatively hard to come by with
ones and twos of most. At the Falls of the Ohio we saw a pretty adult Herring
Gull and a Great Egret along with a pair of Northern Shovelers. We also watched
an Osprey take a stick to one of the tall electrical towers beyond Shippingport
Island ... I've wondered why we haven't had an Osprey nesting in the Louisville
area; while we were watching, the "initial" stick fell below as the bird was
attempting to secure it, and I did not see a bird back there again ... maybe
this nest won't "stick" but folks should keep their eyes peeled for a nest in
the Falls area. Later in the afternoon back on the farm, two Wild Turkeys
represented only the second occasion when I have seen them there. It amazes me
that they can find their way into our farm through the mass of urban and
suburban sprawl that has extended more than five miles past it in the last 50
years!

Yesterday while working on the farm the only things I encountered of interest
were a couple of Bobolinks and a Grasshopper Sparrow.
