Ben Yandell and I made a circuit from Peabody WMA to Union County via the
northern end of the LBL area on Sunday. We tallied 104 species, more by
birding all day and visiting a variety of habitats than by a concerted
effort to maximize the day list. Without keeping numbers thru the day, I'm
not sure about this, but it is possible that our most abundant waterbird was
American White Pelican . . . my how times have changed! At least
Double-crested Cormorant, American Coot, and Ring-billed Gull should have
been more abundant, but I think only the coot may have outdone the pelicans
by a bit if we'd kept close track. Lack of good wind and my blindness
contributed to an overall lack of raptors on the day, but what a beautiful
day to be out. Highlights included:
Peabody WMA, Ohio Co: an Orange-crowned Warbler, zillions of sparrows
including at least 10 Lincoln's and 20-25 White-crowned and our first junco
of the season; 2 different pairs of Great Horned Owls enjoying the cool
morning by engaging in much calling, and a Tennessee Warbler with two
distinct wing bars.
Rockport-Paradise Road, Muhlenberg Co: 10 No Rough-wingd Swallows, a nice
Blue-headed Vireo and a Fox Sparrow (BY).
Peabody WMA, Muhlenberg Co: Tree Swallows everywhere you looked.
Paradise Ash Basin: 2 Semi Plovers, ca 10 Dunlin; 4 Least Sps; a neat kettle
of 85 Black Vultures stacked up; 3rd year Bald Eagle.
Eddy Creek embayment, Lake Barkley: still 1 Snowy Egret; 1 Spotted Sp; 150+
Least Sps; 10-15+ Dunlin; 3 Stilt Sps; both yellowlegs
Kuttawa Overlook, Lake Barkley: two visible bars contained 45+ and 493+ Am
White Pelicans; unknown if a Ring-necked Duck and 2 Lesser Scaup were new
arrivals or injured summerers; the pelicans had forced most of the gulls off
the main bar, but a decent mix contained 2 adult Lesser Black-backs.
Lake Barkley above the dam: an adult Mute Swan of unknown origin with a
flock of Canada Geese; an Am White Pelican with a broken wing; more ducks
including a Ruddy, Am Wigeon, and more Lesser Scaup than I was aware
summered; a Common Loon; and a mix of gulls that included a Franklin's Gull
that looked to be an adult.
Kentucky Lake above the dam: not much other than a 3rd adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull on the afternoon.
Ohio River below Smithland Dam: another adult Franklin's Gull; 100+ other
gulls, mostly Ringers with 15-20 Herrings.
Union County Camp Mines complex: 5 Ring-necked Ducks; 9 juv Am
Golden-Plovers; more Dunlin; a good mix of dabbling ducks including all
regular spp except Am Black Duck; Am Pipits.
