I hadn't been by Taylorsville Lake in several years, and the recent reports
of shorebirds and waders there served as some impetus. So yesterday after
work I drove over to the Van Buren boat ramp area where most of the action
has been lately. It appears that precipitation from the remnants of
Hurricane Katrina also raised the level of this lake significantly, as there
was no shorebird habitat at all. Not sure how long it will take for the
level to drop, but it isn't going to be good for shorebirds in the next
several days, at least.
What I did see was:
72+ Double-crested Cormorants
62+ Great Blue Herons (mostly juvs from this year)
22+ Great Egrets
1 ad Black-crowned Night-Heron
