[birdky] RPT: Sauerheber Unit Sloughs WMA, Oct 27

Last Saturday, the Yandells, Eddie Huber, Major Waltman, Roseanna
Denton, Charlie Crawford, and myself birded the Sauerheber Unit one last
time before it closed. Yellow Rail was a target bird that we could not
kick up, but we had a very enjoyable day. Highlights included:

All of the regular dabblers including probably 25+ No Pintail and
200-250 Green-wg Teal
Greater White-fronted Geese (CC had 15+ in early AM, then we saw/heard a
few during the day)
Cackling Geese (9 with Mallards et al.) visible from KY 268
American Bittern 2

Raptors ... were staging what appeared to be a major flight into the
area ... during the brightest period of mid-day, we had a number of
groups of 2-8 Red-tailed Hawks floating in from the west over the area
and moving on ... members of our group variously estimated 40-75 birds
on the day at the WMA with my "conservative" field note total going
40-50+ ... at one point we had 15-20 in about a five minute span ... it
was ALMOST like being at Veracruz :o) Northern Harrier (probably 10-15+
with most also migrating overhead); both Accips; Peregrine Falcon (1
adult).

Virginia Rail 1
Sora 4
Sandhill Crane 2 ... the called nicely to announce their presence to us
as they seemingly arrived high in the sky from the north and circled
around a bit and off to the east

Sedge Wren several
Marsh Wren 2+
Le Conte's Sparrow 3-4 with some really nice looks at a couple
Rusty Blackbird our first of the fall with 25+
