Just a few quick highlights from western KY earlier in the week ...
Tues, Nov 27: already noted presence of California Gull 26-27 Nov below
Ky Dam in previous post; a juv. Peregrine Falcon is hanging around below
Barkley Dam, sitting on the powerline towers alot; counted at least 175
Horned Grebes on the north end of Lake Barkley; in among one of the
larger groups was a single Eared Grebe; for about 2 hours 10-12 EST,
flock after flock of Snow Geese went southwest VERY high in the air;
some flocks could not be heard until they were directly overhead; also
two flocks of Greater White-fronted Geese; also passing overhead were
small numbers of Horned Larks, American Pipits, and Lapland Longspurs; I
also heard but did not see Sandhill Crane flocks twice; on Kentucky Lake
from the dam to Birmingham Point I counted AT LEAST 980 Horned Grebes;
120 Common Loons, and probably well over 1000 Common Goldeneye; one
flock of Lesser Scaup had a female-type Black Scoter with them; and I
saw 2-4 Pine Siskins at two spots on west side of the lake, probably
visiting feeders there.
Wed, Nov 28: Fulton County w/ Hap Chambers. Relatively mundane, with
only expected birds present. Horned Larks, American Pipits, and Lapland
Longspurs widespread in many fields; one Brewer's Blackbird heard at
Open Pond; waterfowl not abundant; most geese were Greater
White-fronted; raptors not numerous; one Krider's or Krider's x harlan's
intergrade observed at Lake No. 9; probably best birds were 4 Pine
Siskins at Long Point and another heard with 2 Purple Finches near Lake
No. 9.
Thurs, Nov 29: banded a young female Ruby-throated Hummingbird in Oldham
County where the young male Rufous is staying. The bird is healthy so
far.
