A catch up on recent birding highlights:
McElroy Lake in Warren County has begun to recede
slightly, but shorebird numbers remain low due to
migration being past peak and little mud around the
lake. Semipalmated Sandpipers and Semipalmated Plovers
have been present in low numbers daily. Other species
of interest recently include Savannah Sparrows,
White-rumped Sandpipers, and Black-bellied Plovers
through the 24th, a Cattle Egret on the 26th, and a
Greater Yellowlegs and Black Tern on the 28th.
Other recent migrants recorded were a female Bobolink
on the WKU farm on the 26th, and a non-calling
Willow/Alder Flycatcher at Chaney Lake on the 28th.
Chaney Lake remains stable with few birds present.
A trip to eastern Kentucky on the 29th for eastern
specialties resulted in the following highlights:
Big Black Mountain in Harlan County:
Ruffed Grouse strutting around in the road at the
summit.
Seventeen warbler species including several
Black-throated Blues and Canadas.
Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Dark-eyed Junco.
Ten or eleven singing Least Flycatchers in the area of
the summit with one observed carrying food. Many of
these were probably lingering migrants. There is no
documented breeding record of this species in
Kentucky, but they no doubt nest on Big Black Mountain
at least occasionally. I also observed one there on 7
July of last year.
Bad Branch Nature Preserve in Letcher County:
Raven vocalizing near High Rocks and 2 Swainson's
Warblers.
Although I didn't get so see a bear, I did see some
droppings. That was enough to make me look in the
thickets a lot.
Two Great Blue Herons were observed near Cumberland.
