I missed the big waterbird movement on Saturday, but figured there would be
at least a shadow of birds yesterday. Unfortunately, the best spots on the
Ohio at Louisville were NOT looked at Sat from what I can tell. A Beckham
Bird Club trip had birds on the river above Cox's Park but weather
conditions apparently precluded much identification and they did not visit
the main basin, Big-Four or Falls.
Yeserday, I looked only at the best spots from Six-Mile Island, downstream,
including the Falls of the Ohio: only a few scattered Com Loons and a few
small flocks of Horned Grebes; 6 No Pintail; a few Les Scaup; Falls area
still has about 300-400 gulls, about half Bonys; and a single Forster's Tern
is still hanging in there. Pat Bell spotted us an imm. Bald Eagle flying
down the river, which was soon followed by a No. Harrier. Throughout the
day, the dark overcast was giving away the presence of a constant parade of
migrating Red-tails (however I continue to see FEW local birds along the
roads and fear we lost a large percentage of our resident pop from West Nile
:o(
Green River Lake: was appalled to see the new facilities at the State Dock
that obscure much of the view from there and then got chased off the dam by
a Ranger :o( Also, recent rains have the lake 2 feet OVER summer pool, so
there is ALOT of water to scan; according to a local, it is supposed to
start dropping back towards winter pool this week. Waterbird totals included
about 70-75+ Com Loons, although many were busy replenishing their fat
reserves after their big flight Fri night and the total present was likely
much greater; scattered singles and small groups of Horned and Pied-billed
Grebes, a few D-cr Cormorants; a few Mallards, Gr-wg Teal, Wood Ducks,
Bufflehead, Red-br Mergansers, and Hooded Mergansers; one flock of divers of
about 130 indivs; mostly Les Scaup with some Ring-necks and a few Redheads;
nicest group was 8 scoters off the state dock (4 Surf and 4 Black). A flock
of 22 Sandhill Cranes passed over. Gulls are mostly Bonys with some Ringers
above and below the dam. I heard a Dunlin heading somewhere fast, but never
saw it. An Eastern Phoebe and a late Indigo Bunting were passerine
highlights.
