Sue Massey emailed me last week and told me that she last saw her imm.
male Rufous Hummingbird on Sat., February 9th, so we are finally
Rufous-less for the first time this winter. The bird disappeared during
decent weather, so it is quite possible that cold temps didn't bother
it.
Last Friday, Zoltan Hegyi and I were heading for Mammoth Cave National
Park when we encounted a freshly road-killed Short-eared Owl on the
shoulder of the Bluegrass Parkway at Mile 23 near Bardstown.
Ben & Mary Yandell were down at Cecilia on Saturday and also got
glimpses of a "white" crane; they got a better look at it than I did and
it looked like a partial albino rather than a Whooper. I am satisfied
that what I saw a couple of weeks ago was this same leucistic bird, and
not a Whooper.
Saturday afternoon, my mother, and sister and I watched a white-tailed
deer cautiously come up to the cylindrical sunflower feeder outside the
back door and nearly empty it out by sticking its tongue into one of the
bottom openings to secure the seeds (while two less bold young bucks
sniffed around the cracked corn on the ground). I knew these guys were
stealing seed at night but was rather surprised to see them making a
raid in broad daylight! Is there a category for "mammalian freeloaders"
on the GBBC entry forms? ? ?
