Our family farm in eastern Jefferson County was still without power
yesterday afternoon, a full week after Ike breezed through the area.
I've seen an influx of hummers there this week ... after hearing a
bee-keeper talk about how the winds have diminished late-season nectar
sources for honeybees on Saturday, I guess the winds must have also
greatly diminished nectaring sources for hummingbirds.
Last Thursday morning, I had three female/imm. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
descend onto one of our sunflower feeders and chase away all other
comers for about 45 minutes; at least one was still around later in the
afternoon.
Yesterday, while clearing trees and branches from some of my trails on
the farm I saw only common migrants, although a great look at a pretty
Philly Vireo was nice.
