[birdky] RPT: Melcon retention basin, Jefferson County

Eddie Huber has been keeping tabs on the Melco flood retention basin in
southern Jefferson County for the past couple of months. Above-average
rainfall has put shorebird habitat at a premium since early September,
but on some days during drier spells there have been a few common
shorebirds. Eddie and I visited the site this morning before the rains
set in. A nice little group of late-season shorebirds was present in a
couple of spots where water has receded to form some shoreline. The
shorebird list included 14 Killdeer, 16 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Lesser
Yellowlegs, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, 9 Dunlin, and a juv. Long-billed
Dowitcher molting into basic plumage. Yesterday Eddie had a tardy
Semipalmated Plover. Dabbling ducks have also been present and today's
array included 35+ Green-winged Teal; 12+ Northern Shovelers; 1+
Gadwall; and some Mallards.
