[birdky] RPT: Melco retention basin shorebirds, Jefferson Co., 4 Sep 2006

About a dozen folks visited the Melco basin this morning. The species total was 
down 1 only because we could not locate a Wilson's Snipe. Most of what we saw 
was similar to Saturday, although a few numbers were higher.
 
Semipalmated Plover 4
Killdeer 100-125
Greater Yellowlegs 4+
Lesser Yellowlegs 50
Willet 1 juv (since Thurs)
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Solitary Sandpiper 1
Pectoral Sandpiper 35+
Least Sandpiper 10-15+
Semipalmated Sandpiper 10+
Baird's Sandpiper 1 juv
White-rumped Sandpiper 1 ad
Stilt Sandpiper 30 (! ... likely a new high count for Louisville area and most 
I've seen in at least 10-15 years)
Short-billed Dowitcher 13
Black Tern 1 juvs
Finally got some new waterfowl there today ... in addition to Can Geese, 
Mallards, Wood Ducks and Blue-winged Teal, 1 or 2 Green-winged Teal and a 
Northern Shoveler were present today.
Also observed were two tardy Purple Martins.
