Until recently, the Melco flood retention basin in southern Jefferson County
has been bone dry since about mid-May. The past week's rain showers have put a
little water back into the basin, but it remains relatively dry and without
water on the flats over the summer, a pretty good growth of weeds and grasses
has covered much of the bottom of the basin. The combination of little water
and the presence of the weeds, unfortunately, does not bode well for as
exciting a fall shorebird season in 2007, at least presently.
Today around mid-day, there were 20-25 Killdeer, 1 Semipalmated Plover, and 4
Least Sandpipers visible from the parking area, along with a few Canada Geese,
Mallards, and Great Blue Herons. I suspect a few Solitaries and Spotteds could
have been lurking around some of the smaller pools around the margin.
