[birdky] RPT: Logan Lamentations and Obseravations

28 March 2006:

The Free State of Logan is dry just like its neighbor, Warren County. This
means that the potholes I often use to find scattered shorebirds are absent or
miniscule in size. They are without birds other than blackbirds, Killdeer, and
occasionally, Snipe. Each promise of rain seems to fizzel to drizzle or mist.
Yesterday was a prime example.

Sunday afternoon, I drove for nearly 20 miles in rural south Logan and found
only 8 Wilson's Snipe at a Farm Pond west of Adairville and just north of the
South Fork of the Red River.

On the positive side, my yard Tree Swallow population has risen to 6. I have
observed copulation, but not nests are yet constructed. My Martin male
population has increased by 1 to 3 males, not females persent yet. I have one
Eastern Bluebird nest, but no eggs yet. A Mockingbird constantly chases the
Bluebirds as the box appears to be in his feeding territory.

I also found a dead Cowbird at the feeder (HaHoo!). I showed no sign of
injury. Hope this means nothing and that I am just paranoid with Bird Flu and
West Nile Virus talk in the air. Too bad is wan't a female.

That concludes this report.

May it rain in copious amounts over the next few weeks.
