[birdky] RPT: Lewis Co WMA - Bank Swallows, etc.

July 4, 2005: I took a walk this morning along the Ohio River at the
Lewis County Wildlife Management Area. The bank swallow colony was very
active. I could see about a 100 birds in the air at any one time. Soon
to fledge nestlings were perched at the entrances of the dens waiting
for food. Many have already fledged. About 100 to 200 were perched on
a wire along the WMA access road about a ¼-mile from the nest site.
Rough-winged swallows and a pair of kingfishers were also present along
the river. From the river I crossed a large soybean field towards a
wetland (dry). A grasshopper sparrow was singing in the soybean field.
There was a fair amount of grass and weeds interspersed with the
soybeans, so the habitat must have been good enough.
