[birdky] RPT: KY 739 Transient Lake-Pond and other Logan birds today

26 May 2008:

I planed all weekend to do some birding the morning and mow the yard this
afternoon. The weather foiled my plans as it rained this AM and put 2.6 inches
in my rain guage. I postponed mowing until tomorrow, but managed to bird a
little this afternoon.

The most interesting birds were all at the KY 739 Transient Lake-Pond.
Observed there were:

*       2 Broods of Mallard Ducklings;
*       1 Brood of Wood Duck Ducklings;
*       3 Wilson's Phalaropes, 2 males and 1 stunning female;
*       2 White-rumped Sandpipers;
*       ~10 Dunlin:
*       ~150 Semi-palmated Sandpipers; and
*       1  Black Tern.

Other species observed included Wilson's Plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral
Sandpiper, Purple Martin, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, and Grasshopper Sparrow.
About a mile south of the pond, numerous Dickcissels were hear singing.

Perhaps the "oddest bird" observed was the Logan County resident, Frank Lyne.
Actually, Frank had the the Phalaropes in the scope for me with I arrived.
They were a "Logan County Bird" for me. Thanks, Frank!

At a smaller Transient Pond on US 431 south of Russellville, I observed ~ 5
Semi-palmated Plovers, ~30 Semi-palmated Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 4
Lesser Yellowlegs, & 1 Least Sandpiper.

That concludes this report.

Mark Bennett, Russellville, Logan County
