Forty or so members attended the spring Ky. Ornithological Society at Barren River Lake State Resort Park April 29-May 1. Field trips were held around the lake, in southern Warren County (highlighted by visits to McElroy Lake) and a Sunday morning trip to Mammoth Cave National Park. I believe a total of 148 species was reported including 15 species of shorebirds at McElroy Lake. Sunday morning was better there due to overnight rains with additions of Upland Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, and both species of dowitchers. A pair of White-winged Scoters was also in the middle of the lake Sunday morning. Side trips to other spots in southern Warren County on Saturday added a pair of Lark Sparrows gathering nesting material and a flock of Bobolinks. Barren River Lake was quite high and few waterbirds were in evidence. Songbird migrants were not abundant, but the Sunday morning trip to Mammoth Cave added several species to the warbler list. The warbler species total for the weekend was 27. Our Saturday evening speaker, Julie Zickefoose, found a Louisiana Waterthrush nest while leading a trip on Saturday morning in the park! Thanks to all who made the weekend a success. The fall meeting will be held at Pine Mountain State Resort Park, September 30-October 2, 2011.
