Nearly 75 members and guests attended this weekend's Ky Ornithological Society
spring meeting at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. Just over 100 species
were tallied on the weekend with waterbirds in short supply in that area. There
were MANY forest songbirds around, but almost all of them were nesters ... but
no one was complaining about the abundance of tanagers, vireos, and warblers
(including Hoodeds, Worm-eatings, Black-and-whites, etc.). Blackpoll,
Chestnut-sided, and Blackburnian were probably the most interesting migrant
warbler species encountered. A Swainson's Warbler was reported along Trail 12
in the park. This morning, 15-20 of us visited a Golden-winged Warbler breeding
study site about 35-40 minutes southeast of Cumberland Falls in Whitley County
and were treated to nice scope views of singing males in treetops, in addition
to a male Brewster's Warbler.
