The reason the Reeve was so difficult to see today was at least in great part
due to the presence of at least one Peregrine Falcon (a huge bird with very
slow wing beats). The Reevet was absent from view at the south end of the lake
for at least 2 hours (1.5 by Aaron & David Brown and at least an additional
30-45 minutes by us (Eddie Huber, Richard Healy, and myself).
We did get nice looks at the bird for about 10 minutes thanks to the luck Steve
and Mitch brought along with them.
Shorebirds PM:
Black-bellied Plover 1
Semipalmated Plover (at least 10)
Killdeer 20-25+
Greater Yellowlegs 10+
Lesser Yellowlegs probably 80-100 total (I think some dropped in as the showers
approached from the northwest)
Solitary Sandpiper 1
Spotted Sandpiper 5
Least Sandpiper 50-60+
Western Sandpiper (at least 4 including one very sharp looking bird, two in
molt, and one mostly still in basic)
Pectoral Sandpiper 20-25
Dunlin 1
Reeve 1
Long-billed Dowitcher (10 seen at one time; only calls heard were L-b)
Watefowl were Canada Goose, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal,
American Wigeon, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup,
Bufflehead, Surf Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser, and Ruddy Duck. Also present
were some Pied-billed Grebes, 1 Horned Grebe, and many American Coots. All 6
swallows were seen plus many American Pipits.
