May 10 was the North American Migration Count (NAMC) for Jefferson County,
Kentucky.
Temperatures were 50-70, early fog with skies ranging from partly cloudy to
mostly sunny. Light winds; no precipitation. 15 observers in 9 parties.
57.2 total party-hours (47.1 by foot). 137 total miles (27 by foot).
In 2002, we had 134 species on this count, and that had been the record
since 1995. We broke that, with a total of 137 species (and that?s without
counting a hybrid warbler)! More observers than usual and good shorebird
and warbler counts helped set the new record. 4,969 individual birds
reported, not counting downy young.
Notable observations: hooded mergansers with (non-downy) young, 11 species
of shorebird (including white-rumped sandpiper and greater yellowlegs),
herring gull, Caspian tern, 5 vireo species, and 27 warbler species (with a
Lawrence?s warbler making it 28 forms).
In addition to the rarities, unusually high counts were reported for: great
blue heron, black vulture, red-shouldered hawk, solitary sandpiper, lesser
yellowlegs, least sandpiper, ring-billed gull, and several warbler species.
Biggest miss was yellow-billed cuckoo.
Thanks to all the participants: Win Ahrens, Michael Autin, Pat and Jane
Bell, Carol Besse, Eddie and Jennifer Huber, Paul and Carol McAllister,
Missy Royer, Carol Stallard, Matt Stickel, Barbara Woerner, Ben and Mary
Yandell.
