I checked most of Charlie Crawford's Henderson/Union County water holes
yesterday. A few still have water but no shorebirds (I tallied a whopping 8
Killdeer and 3 Least Sandpipers in all of Henderson County). Recent rains have
actually resulted in a couple coming back up a little, including the fluddle
along Uniontown-Mt. Vernon Road.
I had only slightly better luck at the Camp Mines in Union County, where 3
American Golden-Plovers and a Stilt Sandpiper were "highlights" ... nice flocks
of Blue-winged Teal were at a couple of spots. Both Camp #9 and Camp #11
continue to underwhelm, however; summer rains have resulted in very little
habitat.
Before departing Louisville I ran by Melco. Just four common species of
shorebirds although there is decent habitat there. A single American
Golden-Plover continues to be the "highlight" there.
I mowed a sizable hay field on our farm on Monday; a single Sora and a Savannah
Sparrow were the only migrants encountered. I had two Red-breasted Nuthatches
in the yard yesterday morning.
