Having raised some supercillia with my purple finch sighting at Nettleroth Bird
Sanctuary on 11/05, I decided to go back and try again this morning even though
I felt confident in my earlier ID. Well, I located house finches today. They
weren't in the same tree but were in the same area of the park and feeding on
the same seed pods. There were the same number of birds (four) as I'd seen on
the 5th. Hmmm...I was certain of my ID because the bold white supercillia of
the females seemed to confirm it. Last spring, I had nesting house finches in
my blue spruce tree in the front yard. So I thought I knew a house finch when I
saw one. Perhaps not. Today's highlight was a beautiful wood duck pair, male
and female, in Beargrass Creek in Nettleroth proper. Here is my report:

Observation date: 11/10/08
Notes: Location was on Cherokee Park Road,
part of the Scenic Loop, between the archery range near the end of
Beals Branch Drive and Maple Hill Road. Weather sunny with temperature
at 37F.
