[birdky] RPT: Birding South Louisville March 28; Lesser Yellowlegs, swallows and sparrows

I went with Barbara Woerner to help lead an Olmstead Parks Conservancy Birding 
trip to Iroquois Park only to find it was cancelled because of expected storms, 
so we traveled down National Turnpike birding wetlands and other side roads in 
between, down Minors Lane South and finally Jefferson Memorial Forest.  It was 
the kind of day where areas I had been checking all winter finally produced 
some of the birds I was hoping to find.  The list:

Hooded Merganser-6 fem. unexpected in a canal off ML

Yellow-thr. Warbler?-heard sounded odd like it was tuning up never seemed to do 
a complete song

Dark-eyed Junco-25 or so plus one indi. that stuck out like a sore thumb very 
probable imm. "Oregon" Junco  sides very well delineated from hood which was 
very much in a convex shape as opposed to the concave pattern I usually see on 
juncos as well as sharply contrasting gray hood from very clean brown back with 
just a small area of brown feathers going up the back of the nape to the top of 
the crown  other than the absence of dark lores head seemed pale enough in some 
lights to give impression of Pink-sided Junco  I have been studying juncos for 
awhile now and after reviewing lots of pictures on the internet I haven't come 
across a junco I suspected of being anything interesting for the better half of 
the winter until yesterday

Eastern Meadowlark-10 or so NT, with the great majority off ML

Rusty Blackbird-2 seen in same woddlot edge as Hairy Woodpeckers

Co. Grackle-55+E

Brown-hd. Cowbird-20+E

House Finch-6 or so

Am. Goldfinch-15 maybe more scattered widely E

House Sparrow-heard briefly ML

 

Upland Chorus Frogs grating, Thrashers singing, and swallows gliding over 
shallow pools...Spring has sprung
