[birdky] RPT: BBS route and periodic cicadas

I ran a Breeding Bird Survey route in Lee County this morning. The species
tally was in the high 60s, but what was nicest for me was a list of 16 species
of warblers ... lucky to get 5 or 6 on most central KY routes. Ceruleans were
singing at 4 or 5 stops with Ovenbirds and Hoodeds leading the abundance list.
Lingering migrants included a singing (pur-wee) Yellow-bellied Flycatcher and a
singing White-throated Sparrow; the latter really caught me off guard ... I
listened to the song three times before I placed what it was ... so out of
place this late just out in the rural woodlands.

Along the route's last ten stops, small numbers of periodic cicadas were
calling in the forest. While working in the yard in Frankfort over the weekend,
I noted a single male persistently "singing" the low, drawn-out "phaaaa-roh"
call, which is what the ones today were saying. Has anyone else noted these
little beasts elsewhere in the state this year? With all the broods, I suspect
there is at least a minor emergence in some part of the state every year.
