[birdky] RPT: April 24, 2005

Amy and I couldn't stand not being out even though the snow showers were
still flying around Frankfort yesterday morning. A trip to the Brown Power
Plant in Mercer County for grounded shorebirds yielded no shorebirds and
only a smattering of waterbirds including 2 female Red-breasted Mergs, 2
female Hooded Mergs, a small group of Cormorants, and an Osprey.

A large farm pond in Anderson County had the only shorebirds on the day ...
single Pectoral, Spotted and Lesser Yellowlegs, along with an imm. male
Red-breasted Merg.

Another attempt to find shorebirds at the Falls of the Ohio again yielded
none and only 9 Caspian Terns among the regulars: Cormorants, Ring-billed
Gulls and Great Blues.

To me the neatest phenomenon of the past two days was the hoards of swallows
on protected lakes and ponds. Seems like the Barns were the species most on
the move and affected.

At the family farm in eastern Jefferson County, I'd been curious what had
been grounded by the inclement weather and it appears it was an early season
wave of migrants including numerous Yellow-rumped and Palm warblers ... we
also had single Black-throated Green, Orange-crowned, and Nashville
warblers.
