[birdky] RPT: A few notes from west KY

Work took me out west for a couple of days.

First arrivals and highlights for me included the following: March 29 --
Cliff Swallows all around the dams area; after dark I was driving around
rural Livingston County listening for choruses of Crawfish Frogs and I think
I actually for the first time in 30 years of birding heard a Barn Owl
calling in Kentucky ... I wasn't absolutely sure, but it gave several harsh
notes unlike a yg. Great Horned Owl; March 30 -- a LeConte's Sparrow in
western McCracken County; at least 30 Brewer's Blackbirds at the Smokey Road
spot in Ballard County; 18 American Golden-Plovers and 2 Solitary Sandpipers
in Ballard County; Barn Swallows and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers scattered. This
morning I stopped by the Kuttawa heronry on Lake Barkley and noted that
plenty of Black-crowned Night-Herons had returned, along with three Great
Egrets that were in full, fluffy display in the trees; they sure are weird
but beautiful when they are showing off! There were only 3 American White
Pelicans on one of the bars and none below Barkley Dam ... they must all be
over on Ky Lake this spring.
