Today, Jane and Pat Bell, Jackie Elmore, and I saw at least 4 Snow Buntings
along Chamberlain Lane, approximately 3/4 mile east of it's junction with
Sleepy Hollow Road in northeastern Jefferson County; I don't have my
gazetteer with me, but I think Sleepy Hollow is KY 329?? This is about 2
miles NE of the Gene Snyder jct w/ KY 22. The buntings put on a nice show
and were in the company of 50+ Horned Larks and 25-30+ Lapland Longspurs.
While we were there, a male Merlin buzzed the birds, almost taking a Horned
Lark.
At the LaGrange Reformatory Lake, Jackie and I had about 1500 Canada Geese,
5 Greater White-fronted Geese, and six Snow Geese along with about 20 No
Shovelers, a few each of Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Bufflehead, Gadwall and Am
Wigeon and a female No Pintail with sev hundred Mallards and som Am Black
Ducks. The lake was frozen except for two small openings which will
probably close tonight.
Jackie and I returned to our family farm about 5:00 p.m. to find that the
15 Horned Larks and 1 Lapland Longspur that had been there when we departed
about 1:00 had become 30 Horned Larks and 3 Snow Buntings. Just before the
sun set, a male Merlin (I can't help but wonder if this is the same bird
that we saw on Chamberlain . . . it looks the same and it is about 4 miles
distant???) buzzed the birds before heading north to chase sparrows.
Anyone around Louisville who knows how to get to the family farm is welcome
to come look for buntings tomorrow; I would suspect that they will return
given past history. They are in the pasture with the cattle between the
silos and the second grouping of sheds. I also have put some corn out on
the drive that I hope they will find tomorrow. Jackie and I also had a
couple of Pine Siskins and there is a flock of 125+ Am Goldfinches in the
nearby sunflower field that may be worth scrutinizing for something as well
as numerous sparrows including Chipping, Savannah, and American Trees in
the Indian grass fields beyond the barns.
