Steve and I were birding at Sinclair (near Drakesboro) on the 15th, Wednesday
evening. The only martins were saw were the ones near the martin houses at the
Fish and Wildlife building.
We will check out the Hwy 70 roost vicinity this week.

Steve & all,

That roost was checked out by Steve and Teresa Graham last year; it was
reported on in The Kentucky Warbler, Vol. 91, p. 12 ("10,000 to 15,000 were
seen going to roost in the floodplain of Flat Creek just sw. of the East
Volunteer Mine, Hopkins County, 4 August 2014" ...

however, the roost moved around some during the season as I recall, and they
could not find it in the same place a week or two later and it appeared to move
some.

Also ... I've noticed that this year's martin roosts are moving around some; a
few days ago the roost at Lexington was located southwest of town, but this
morning it appeared to be on the southeast side of town out past Man-o-war.

Subject: [birdky] RFI: Purple Martin Roost Verification

The Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA) is asking for help to verify
the location of a purple martin roost in western Kentucky, specifically a
roost near Drakesboro on their list
(http://purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30748).

I looked at radar this morning and there is a large roost ring visible on the
Muhlenberg and Hopkins County line east of Madisonville.  The center of the
roost ring appears to originate near a bend on the Pond River.  Coordinates
from Google Earth are 37 18 35.0 and -87 20 43.5.  This spot is located on
page 62, block C2, in the Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer by DeLorme.

After zooming in on Google Earth, I noticed several potential roost sites in
the area.  Close to the center of the radar signature is a railroad bridge
where the river bends south and nearly touches the railroad tracks.  Martin
roosts are often located on bridges.  There is a 3-fingered lake nearby that
has a long, narrow island in it.  Islands make good roost sites too.  A third
potential roost site could be tree islands located in large agricultural
fields.
