We have been enjoying the evening massing of the martins in our suburban back yard. Around 8:45 we have approximately 600 birds vying for a spot in our 12 room martin house. By 9:00 they depart eastward for their roosting spot. Last night we followed them. They have chosen a power line in the last remaining farm land between Stuart Hall subdivision and the interstate. There were easily a couple thousand. We are lucky to be in their path and have the visit. On Friday evening I found an immature martin with its left foot caught in the brace wire to the electric pole at the corner of our yard, thirty plus feet off the ground. I managed to free it from atop my ladder leaning against the round pole. I was a little nervous up there; Rhonda swore she was steadying the ladder not shaking it. I don't know how a broken leg will affect the bird's survival. Scott Lexington, KY smarsh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:smarsh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
