The Martins at the Falls of the Ohio have increased significantly in numbers on each of our visits. This past Friday ~300-400 birds were feeding just beyond the fixed weir an left area heading north. We have yet to pursue to locate roosting area... This weekend I've noticed an unusual gathering of purple martins on an oak tree crag and in the surrounding woodlot trees, across the road from our house. I can't tell how many, but there are 20 to 30 birds visible in the air and perched in the trees, at any given time. There are a lot of juveniles among them and all are very vocal. I can't step out of the house without hearing them. I first became aware of them on Friday evening, when I heard a fuss. I stepped out and watched a Cooper's hawk fly across, from the woodlot across our property and head out to the east, over the fields... the whole while being harassed by a swarm of 10 or 15 martins. Even after I could no longer see the hawk with my binocular, I could still tell where it was, by the group of harassing martins. I suspect that they are gathering, in prep to head off to one of Brainard's roosts. S. Tyson, Schochoh, Logan Co.
