[birdky] Peabody 9 October 2008

Robert Dever and I spent part of the day birding the Homestead unit of the
Peabody wma on Thursday. We began the day with a raptor/vulture liftoff watch
from a high spot along H1 where we could scan the Ken hills. The wind was calm
upon our arrival and the first scan revealed only one Turkey Vulture in the
air.

Within minutes after a breeze began and the thermals started popping, hawks and
vultures were in sight everywhere. We watched for a good 30 minutes until the
birds were up and on their way. Species observed during that time were
hundreds of Black and Turkey Vultures, Osprey, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned
Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and American
Kestrel.

Other highlights included:

DC Cormorant (20+ Island Lake)
Great Egret (2)
Wilson's Snipe
Tree, Northern Rough-winged, and Barn Swallows
Marsh Wren
Orange-crowned Warbler
Savannah Sparrow

Along the edges of a beaver pond we watched hundreds of Autumn Meadowhawks
mating and ovipositing and I spent some time photographing them. I had never
seen this beautiful little dragonfly in such numbers before, quite a sight.

Joanie and I were still hosting at least 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds as of
Thursday evening.
