[birdky] Re: Peabody 26 November 2004

A couple more birds to add to the Peabody day-list
included 2-3 Sedge Wrens and a LeConte's Sparrow in
the S5 marsh, 8 Bonaparte's Gulls in the ash basin,
and the Northern Shrike was near the S1-S2
intersection near dusk before flying off to the east
towards the smoke stacks. The shrike clearly uses
more than half of the Sinclair unit as its
'territory', so some time locating the bird may be
necessary.

Interestingly, we were unable to locate any
Short-eared Owls at dusk, although one or two have
been seen recently. Additionally, only 4 Northern
Harriers were noted near dusk hunting or coming to
roost as opposed to the 30 or so present some years.
Rodent populations appear very small this year and it
is likely that some of the raptors are around in
smaller numbers than normal on Sinclair.
