I'm over in Hatteras, NC for a series of 10 pelagic trips with Brain
Patteson (http://www.seabirding.com) and I thought I'd send in a brief
report after the first two trips. It's been windy both days, but
interesting stuff to be seen. Yesterday the highlight was a pod of 20
or so Clymene Dolphins; this is one of the more poorly known marine
mammals and has only been seen a few times here over the years. We also
had a beautiful male Red Phalarope. One of the other spotters saw a
Fea's Petrel, but no one else was able to get on it. Today the numbers
of Wilson's Storm-Petrels and Black-capped Petrels increased
considerably but the species total was down. The highlight was a
European Storm-Petrel feeding in the chum right behind the boat; there
are only about 10 records of this species, but it appears based on
recent years that it is a regular, if rare, vagrant in the Gulf Stream.
Brian still has space on the Manteo trips for Memorial Day weekend, as
well as most of the trips coming up in the summer. Hopefully I'll see
some of you here soon.
I've posted some photos from yesterday and today on my SmugMug page (see
link below).
