First, thanks to all who responded to my question about sparrows and house
finches. My journal shows wt sparrows all gone by the end of April. House
finches usually disappear for a few weeks at the end of winter and return in
summer, but seems to me they were out doing whatever house finches do during
the apparent Spring hiatus early.
Went to Ousley Fork Lake, inspired by the Grosbeaks and the weather.
Delorme page 52, G-3. Lots of birds: common loon, blue-winged warbler,
spotted sandpiper (at parking area), blue-gray gnatcatcher (2), barn
swallows (several), Eastern Kingbird (2). Others: singles -- Carolina Wren,
house sparrow, chipping sparrow, downy wp, mallard, great blue heron,
eastern phoebe, brown thrasher, bh cowbird. More than 2 each, mockingbird,
red winged blackbird, song sparrow, crow, starling, blue bird, mourning
dove, cardinal, turkey vulture, robin, common grackle, purple martin, Canada
goose.
