[birdky] Olmstead CBC

29 December 2004:

The Olmstead CBC was held today.  For the first time, the 3 regular
participants divided into 3 parties for about 2 hours then 2 parties.
However, due to ice/slush covered roads, only about 30% more birding
miles were logged.  No rarities were observed.  The following represents
some of the highlights of the count:

2 Greater White-fronted Geese (new to the count circle),
5 Chipping Sparrows (count record),
1 Lesser Scaup, (second occurrence on count)
1 Eastern Phoebe,
2 Winter Wrens,
12 Ring-billed Gulls (pretty good for south Logan County and second
occurrence on count)
1400+ Horned Larks (count record),
5 Loggerhead Shrikes (count record tie),
9 Northern Harriers (count record),
33 Red-tailed Hawks, including 2 Calurus forms/subspecies (count
record),
29 Wilson's Snipe (count record), and
given their absence on so many counts, 4 Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Big misses included Cedar Waxwings (it seems like everyone is missing
them this year) and Fox Sparrow (including the one that chose today to
skip attending Frank Lynes feeder).  Brown Thrasher represents a "little
miss" since one was observed in the count area earlier this week.

Blue Jays were slightly below average for the count, but given the
increased coverage, that represents a fairly low number.  The other
Corvid (American Crow) was well above normal and close to record setting
numbers for the count.
