Birding the Ohio River at Louisville today, 29 October
2002, yielded the following highlights:
LONG-BILLED MURRELET
A basic-plumaged bird near the intersection of Zorn
Avenue and River Road. First viewed through binocs at
300-400 yards and IDed as a murrelet, I had to look
this one up to ID as to species. Good looks through
the scope revealed white patches along the scapular
line and flanks, as well as an entirely dark nape
lacking a white collar, ruling out similar species. I
was able to obtain some decent footage of the bird
with a camcorder held to the eyepiece of my scope, and
anyone wishing to see video stills may email me
personally and I will send a couple.
Heavy barge traffic on the river was moving the bird
around, and it was also observed against the bank on
the Indiana side. It was moving downstream from Zorn
Avenue when I last saw it at approximately 1530 cst.
This rare visitor to North America from Siberia was
certainly the highlight of the day. :0)
