[birdky] Notes of possible interest, ospreys, AWP, DCC, C Terns

Lake Barkley Osprey Nesting survey this year recorded another record number of
nests, 63.  I spotted a nest way past the survey date that is not included in
the count.  Visible from I-24 south of Eddy Creek atop a 150 ft. microwave
tower.  A second nest atop a 150 ft. microwave tower was visited near KY Lake.
The recent high winds may have removed these nests of course most fleding took
place the second week of July. Our KEEP osprey cam site is in the middle of a
new subdivision, Lot 1, progress.........  KEEP is exploring  possible new
locations for potential cams.

Two survey surprises.  An active osprey nest with at least one chick in the
same tree with at least six active dc cormorant nests. This nest is on the
first large island no. of Little River, one other osprey nest with young on the
so. end of this island and about 600 total dcc nests on the island. Next island
no. had about 100 more dcc nests.  The powerline tower just w. of the
Cumberland River channel had two osprey nest on the same tower, one above the
other seperated by about 25 ft.  The lower nest had two adults and the upper
nest, tho not a well constructed nest, had one adult present on the nest.  No
young were present at these condo nests.

Last year I saw the first American White Pelicans arrive on the islands just
west of the river so. of Little River Bay on Sept. 10, a flock of about 45.
This year 7 AWP arrived on Sept 12 and were there yesterday on Sept 15 as
well.  As soon as the island just so. of Little River began to grow its gravel
bar as the water started to go down Caspian Terns began to land.  Peak numbers
so far were a hundred one day, fewer since, peaked at about 300 last late
summer/early fall.
