[birdky] Northern Shrike Still Present

26 November:

Several birders observed the Northern Shrike in the Sinclair unit of the
Peabody WMA again today. The bird was first spotted by Mark Monroe just
off of S-3 Road. It was observed there for several minutes, then it
flew behind a hill and was lost from view. It was re-discovered later
in the morning near the new gigantic lime/ash basin. This massive
structure is surrounded by S-1 road on the west, an unnamed road between
S-1 and Paradise on the north, S-2 Road on the south and the TVA plant
on the east. The bird was essentially in the western edge of this large
rectangle space between the lime/ash basin, S-1 and S-2 when observed.

David Roemer sicked me onto a Golden Eagle flying over as we were
looking for the Shrike in the S-5 road vicinity.

Earlier, I had observed the following on the TVA Lake adjacent to the
old Ash Basin near River Road.

? unidentified dabblers
13 Red-breasted Mergansers
6 Ruddy Ducks
4 Horned Grebes
1 Belted Kingfisher
1 Adult or near adult Bald Eagle
1 Dunlin
1 Least Sandpiper
 &
10 Ring-billed Gulls

At least 1 Palm Warbler remained on the hill just to the west of S-5
where the Shrike was first observer about 2 weeks ago.

Other birds of interest included uncounted American Kestrels,
Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, & Northern Harrier,
Eastern Bluebirds, Horned Larks, American Goldfinches, Great Blue Heron,
common sparrow species, and the usual Canada Geese on Goose Lake.

Thanks to David's eye for the Golden Eagle, Mark's eye for the Shrike,
and Brainard's kind sharing of his radio for allowing me to get 1
life/state bird today and a state bird today. It is a rare day when one
gets to add 2 birds to his main state list and gets a life bird within
50 miles of his home.

As I left the area early, I anticipate that others will post more detail
and perhaps more species than I have reported. I anxiously await their
report(s).

That concludes this report.
