  _____

Somehow my post yesterday, April 30, was cut short. The complete post
follows:

For the first time ever, there is a WHITE CROWNED SPARROW (number 117 yard
bird) in our yard, eating in the ground feeding area. I hardly could believe
it after all these years of keeping records for our yard. Plus a lot of
other yard birds (some overhead) today: WOOD THRUSH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
CAROLINA WREN, NORTHERN CARDINAL, SONG SPARROW, COMMON GRACKLE, MOURNING
DOVE, BLUE JAY, AMERICAN CROW, EASTERN TOWHEE, TUFTED TITMOUSE, AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH, OVENBIRD, PILEATED WOODPECKER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, HOUSE
FINCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, RED-TAILED HAWK, DOWNY
WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, AMERICAN REDSTART, SUMMER TANAGER,
SCARLET TANAGER, WILD TURKEY, BARRED OWL.

Les and I just returned from a great trip to Pawleys Island, SC where we saw
several male PAINTED BUNTINGS. Plus I was able to get a photo of a CLAPPER
RAIL up close. He really cooperated with me for a change. I was only about
12 feet from him and after I finished my photos, he skulked back into the
marsh.

Off the subject but good news, our honey bees are going strong. Despite
separating hives and adding new queens, we had one large swarm which got
away! Maybe the tanagers will find them and leave alone ours in the hives.
Old timers around here call the tanagers "BEE BIRDS".

Cheers,

Joan Carr
