While birding this morning at Falls of the Ohio State Park I observed 6 active Double-crested Cormorant nests. The cormorants are nesting on Shippingport Island and can be observed with a scope from George Rogers Clark Cabin in Clarksville. Just scan to the left of the lower gates of the dam and look for the large dead trees along the shore.
I counted 17 nests (there are 11 G. B. Herons nests with young, and 6 D-C-Cormorant nests that have adults incubating eggs). Note: the cormorant and heron colonies are sharing the same trees.
The osprey is still on the nest at the dam. Both adults were observed, taking turns incubating.
I met Eddie Huber on the observation deck at the interpretative center around 1100 and observed the following birds of interest:
Bald Eagle
Red-shouldered Hawk
Ring-billed Gull
Herring Gull
Semipalmated Sandpiper
Pectoral Sandpiper
Spotted Sandpiper
All the shorebirds and gulls were low numbers.
