There are now designs out there for constructing artificial chimney
swift structures, mostly spearheaded by the Kyle's. See

Subject: [birdky] Re: Nesting Bird in Chimney
I'll soon be 61 and Chimney Swifts have been summer residents of our
house since long before my time. They have always been very polite to
me.
There used to be 4 chimneys on our house. Two were built from the
ground up and had open hearth fire places, the other two went from the
attic up and were connected to stoves in the rooms below by metal stove
pipes. Now the one remaining chimney serves as a vent for a warm morning
gas heater, used only during power outages. There isn't much use for
chimneys nowadays. I wonder what will become of Chimney Swifts when
people quit building chimneys.
