Some birding days are hard to beat and today was one of those days. The day
started with a search for the Bachman's Sparrow. Joe Tom and I hadn't been
there long when he heard the bird sing. I followed the call but gave up hope
of seeing the bird when it sang for the second time farther and deeper in the
brush. We decided a sunrise visit would be more beneficial. The next stop
was the DC Cormorant nests. Thanks to Joe and David for their recent
scouting efforts these nest are fun to see in KY.
Later in the day Clell and I headed for the Scissor-tailed flycatchers site.
We found all 5 young watching papa give hunting lessons. Next we drove to
Barkley Dam. We were coming out of the East side parking lot when Clell said
"what's that on the line"? Sure enough there sat a female Scissor-tailed
flycatcher. Now we hadn't seen momma at the nest spot about one mile away.
We rushed back over to look for her. After a short wait we spotted mom and
dad with their young. We headed back to Barkley Dam where we found a Male
Scissor-tailed flycatcher sitting on a wire. He took off and disappeared in
the same direction the female had flow previously. The final conclusion of
our running back and forth from sites is this is another pair. They may have
a nest somewhere in the area. We never saw them together and when they left
the wires they seemed to miraculously disappear for an extended period. It
grew dark as we watched and we left the mystery for another day. These birds
were on the towers and wires directly across from the picnic/restroom area.
Other birds of interest today were:
Black-crowned night-herons (90+)
Snowy Egret
Wood ducks
Ring-billed gulls (approx. 200)
Caspian Tern
Cliff Swallow
Get out and enjoy the birds, July can be exciting!
