[birdky] Minor Clark Fish Hatchery - 10/29/06

Work has really kept me out of the birding lately with an Open House at my school and then the State Volleyball Tournament this weekend. I finally got a chance to visit the fish hatchery today. I have been so hoping for a Dunlin there to make my shorebird list for Minor Clark a "20 species shorebird list" but today wasn't the day. In fact, there weren't even any Killdeer present. If anyone does spot a Dunlin at Minor Clark, I'd appreciate an email so that I can either get down there to see it or at least add it to the list.

All but 4-5 of the ponds have been drained (including the big ponds). I've found a nice assortment of ducks on my past visits but I don't know if that will last now that they are down to so few ponds with water.

Pied-billed Grebes Lesser Scaup pair Bluebirds - everywhere Yellow-rumped Warblers - everywhere Northern Flickers Bobwhite - heard Great Blue Heron (several) Great Egret (1) Eastern Phoebe Dark-eyed Juncos

Plenty of sparrows everywhere:

Field Sparrows - everywhere
White-throated sparrows
White-crowned sparrows
Swamp sparrows
Song sparrows
Vesper sparrow (I think)

I've posted some new images on the "What's New" page. I have the Vesper sparrow posted and I think that's what it was. The eye ring was very prominent and it did appear to be a white edge on the tail. He was pale, although the images came out darker than what he really was. I'd appreciate someone verifying the Vesper sparrow....and while you're at it, take a look at the Lincoln's sparrow. There were several across from school in the past few weeks and I just want to make sure that I've ID'd them correctly.
