I contacted Rod Middleton, the Fish Hatchery Manager, last week about
draining the ponds. Here is the reply that he emailed back:
"In the last 6 weeks we have harvested 69 ponds so far. There will not
be
any additional ones harvested until the week of 20th when we will
harvest ponds on Thursday and Friday of that week and early the
following week. After that we will harvest ponds about 1 or 2 days week
for the months of August and early September. Tuesday mornings should be
a good morning for those months and toward the end of September we will
start harvesting ponds more often, around 3 days a week. We will drain
ponds almost every day in the month of October. We still allow birders
to drive as long as they stay on the gravel roads that are not marked
closed. We have had problems with people sneaking into our ponds to
fish, so don't surprised if someone comes by to see what you are doing.
Some of our officers are watching more closely as well, I have even been
checked late at night when they happen to come by. If you are stopped
just let them know that you have permission from me to be down there.
What type of vehicle are you driving, that way I will let the people who
live here know what which ones not to worry about? If you get out of the
vehicle, be sure to leave it parked along the main hatchery roads so
people can see it, wildlife is down there banding birds a lot in the
fall and I would not want you to get shot by there cannon while they are
tagging wood ducks. If you need additional information, let me know."
I made a trip down there last week but have been in and out so I
apologize not reporting or sending Rod's reply sooner. Basically
while I was there, there were 2 ponds that had been drained and were
refilling. Unfortunately they had refilled enough that the bottom was
almost covered. I saw one spotted sandpiper and many Killdeer.
There were many Green Herons but no Great Blue Herons or egrets.
