[birdky] Merganser broods at Ballard

Spent a couple hours at Ballard WMA monday afternoon. No good shorebird
habitat exists. Observed 2 broods of Hooded Mergansers. The first brood
contained 9 young which appeared nearly as large as the female and I believe
are capable of flight. The second brood had 5 young that were developing
flight feathers and some feathering on the head but still had about 50% downy
fuzz. These birds did not appear to me to be capable of flight and most
certainly were hatched at Ballard. Other birds of interest:
Snowy Egret 5
Bank Swallows 10 to 20
Bald Eagle 4 year old? bird with a few dark feathers in the tail and on the
crown.
