Aaron Hulsey and I spent the latter part of the afternoon at McElroy. A great
increase in the number of shorebirds has occurred over the past couple of days
and birds dropped in throughout the afternoon. Highlights are listed below.
Previously reported species of waterfowl including the Surf Scoter
Glossy Ibis
(Two spotted by Aaron dropped in about 6:30 and were feeding along the western
shoreline when we left)
Black-bellied Plover (17)
Semipalmated Plover (few hundred)
Killdeer (too many alerting the birds)
Lesser Yellowlegs (~150)
Solitary Sandpiper
Willet
Spotted Sandpiper (10+)
Ruddy Turnstone (12+)
Sanderling (3)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (great increase)
Least Sandpiper
White-rumped Sandpiper (great increase)
Pectoral Sandpiper
Dunlin (didn't count but probably 100+)
Stilt Sandpiper (50+)
Short-billed Dowitcher (140+) I didn't see or hear a Long-billed
Wilson's Phalarope (6)
Red-necked Phalarope (A striking female found by Aaron at the south end)
Caspian Tern (2)
Forster's/Common Tern (2 distant un-IDed fly-over)
Least Tern
Black Tern (45+)
American Pipit
Lark Sparrow (in song along Vance Rd.)
