I chastised Roseanna Denton a bit this past week after she posted that she had seen "thousands" of geese at Long Point. I queried her as to an estimate of the number of geese and she told me there was no way to tell! Well, the official USFWS aerial survey results for January 8, 2003, were just emailed to me and WOW! Now I see why she was overwhelmed! Aerial Waterfowl Survey 1/08/04 Conditions: 36 degrees, cloudy, 5-10 mph SE wind, and 20% ice cover Reelfoot NWR Ducks -- Mallards 80,649; Gadwall 1,230; Wigeon 2,256; Shoveler 775; Pintail 2,395; Wood duck 348; Ringneck 1,500. Total ducks 89,153. Geese -- Snow geese 125,000; White-fronted goose 21,650; Canada goose 2,750. Total geese 149,400. If all these birds are at Long Point, the count for both Snow Geese and Greater White-fronted Geese are record highs for the state as far as I am aware! Wow, I still can't believe those numbers. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
