I went there to see yesterday's Phalaropes as they would have been a
county bird for me. I did not stay long after Frank and Alison left. I
found it pretty much impossible to count all the birds. I have
estimates to what I believe to be the nearest 10 for the species
observed, based on numbers counted. The most interesting feature of the
group of birds to me the was the number of Dowitchers present. I
believe they were Short-billed, but after my most recent error, I will
only firmly say that they were Dowitcher species. Anyway, I did count
44 of the suckers and would say that an estimate of ~50 would be fairly
accurate. Also, there were around 150 - 200 birds of the smaller
variety of shorebird that flew as a group. I can say for sure that this
number does not include Lesser Yellowlegs & Dowitchers also present but
it did include some "medium-sized" birds, probably the some of the
White-rumps and Pectorals that were present. It was a nice accumulation
of common migrants for this time of year in Logan County.
From Frank's descriptions of Dave, I half expected him (David Roemer) to
appear mid-lake walking upon the water. Then, I recalled that Frank is
colorful and rich in his use of the language. If anyone has not visited
Frank's web site to view his carvings and Alison's paintings, they are
missing some interesting art work. To brag on Frank, there are few
people who have a Biology degree, farm for a living, bird, create art
from blocks of wood, and turn a Roemer into a near Deity.

Alison and I couldn't refind the Wilson's Phalaropes at the small
transient lake on 739 in Logan County Wednesday afternoon, but there
were scores of Short-billed Dowitchers, a few Dunlins, Pectoral
Sandpipers, Lesser Yellow-legs, Semi-palmated Plovers, many scores of
Least Sandpipers and one or more Semi-palmated Sandpipers(pic). Mark
Bennett and his daughter Andrea arrived after 5:00. Mark was counting
individual totals when we left.
