[birdky] Lingering ducks at Campbell County

There has been some interesting lingering duck activity at the former
Watertown Yacht Club, now renamed the Manhattan Harbor Marina, at Dayton
(Campbell
Co.) KY. Yesterday (May 15) I noted one male Gadwall still present where a
pair was present on May 5. Today I observed that a male Hooded Merganser (last
noted here on April 19), was stealthily moving through flooded silver maple
branches at the edge of the marina inlet. There is a good-sized riparian woods
of mature silver maples next to the marina. These trees have lots of
hollows that a cavity-nesting duck might be able to use (Wood Ducks nest here
frequently). The levees and edges around the marina also contain good cover
for
ground-nesters. Looks like I'll have to keep an eye out for the odd batch of
ducklings. I have had several other indications of possible Hooded Merganser
breeding within the county (early summer juveniles), once at this same
location. Also present here today was one Spotted Sandpiper.
