[birdky] Lapland longspurs at Spindletop

Stopped at Lexington reservoir 2 and Spindletop this afternoon. Biggest
surprise was several small flocks of longspurs (about 30 total) mixed with the
horned larks. I was able to use my car as a blind, allowing them to get very
close. I don't think I saw any other types of longspurs. The horned larks were
more abundant (at least 200) and seemed to have more color variation than usual
- I presume not the farm resident population. Looked for rusty blackbirds but
saw none. The pond was frozen, but there were good numbers of great blue
herons, mallards, shovelers and possibly ringed-neck ducks in the creek. There
were flyover Canada geese. One farm on Mt. Horeb road had a snow goose mixed
with Canada geese.

The Lexington Reservoir trip was short due to the cold (very windy standing on
the causeway). Unfortunately, the ducks were using holes in the ice some
distance from the road while I was there. No rarities, but good numbers and a
few uncommon things:
Canada goose 200
Mallard 200
Hooded merganzer 100
Red-breasted merganzer 1
American wigeon 4
Black duck 10
Northern shoveler 40
Canvasback 30
Redhead at least 1
Lesser scaup 1
Bufflehead 20
Common goldeneye 12
Ruddy duck 50
Coot 10
Ring billed gull 1

Good birding,
Joe
