Hi, We held the Land Between The Lakes CBC on Sunday. I'll post a summary shortly, but for now, I just wanted to recommend a few spots where there seem to be a lot of birds hanging out. My group covered the area around the Woodlands Nature Station, and there were a lot of birds out and about. One of the good spots was Empire Point. This is the area that used to be the old Empire Farm educational site. Although it is no longer open as an educational site, the area is open to the public to walk around, view wildlife, etc. There is a loop path (an old gravel road) that you can walk and it takes you along around a large field and along the Lake Barkley shoreline. Parts of the road are lined with old trees, including some large pine trees. Along this road, we saw lots of little songbirds buzzing around the trees, including both species of kinglets and several brown creepers. Out in the lake, we saw a variety of waterfowl, including goldeneye. There were also hundreds of cormorants perched on the power towers in the lake. Another spot is the shoreline by the old silo overlook. This isn't labeled, but if you continue on Mulberry Flats road past the turnoffs for Taylor Bay and Empire Point, you get to a gate that says "Road Closed." If you park and walk from there, you'll get to the old (now dilapidated) silo. There were tons of waterfowl there, with the highlight being a group of canvasbacks. There were also a lot of pelicans and cormorants in the distance. Finally, Honker Dam was another really nice spot. We saw I think 7 bald eagles there, as well as a variety of waterfowl including ruddy ducks, hooded mergansers, buffleheads, hormed grebes, ring-necks, and of course the ubiquitous gadwall. Red-headed woodpeckers seemed to be everywhere, at all the spots we went to. Nothing super rare, but some nice birding spots with a lot to look at, if you're looking for a nice day out. Feel free to be in touch with me if you'd like more detailed directions. Aviva YasgurWoodlands Nature StationTrigg/Lyon Counties
